Germany has witnessed a historic development in its domestic security sector. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, responsible for the country’s internal intelligence, will now be led by Sinan Selen, a German citizen of Turkish origin. Selen has officially assumed the role after serving as acting president for the past ten months.

Born in Istanbul, Selen moved to Germany at a young age due to his family’s work. He studied law at the University of Cologne and later held positions within the Ministry of the Interior and the Federal Criminal Police Office. Since January 2019, he has served as deputy head of the agency and is recognized as an expert in international counterterrorism.

With this appointment, Germany sees, for the first time, a person of immigrant background heading a major state security institution. According to German media, Selen will officially begin his duties tomorrow, overseeing the agency’s 4,200 employees.

Experts view this move as a symbol of Germany’s commitment to diversity and experience in the field of domestic security.
