Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani met with U.S. President Donald Trump in New York following Israel’s deadly strike on Doha earlier this week.

The attack on Tuesday killed a Qatari security official and five Hamas representatives, who were discussing a new deal proposed by Trump to end the Gaza conflict. The meeting comes in the wake of this incident, which significantly escalated tensions in the region.

Ahead of the meeting, Sheikh Mohammed held discussions with U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, focusing on the impact of the strikes and the U.S.-Qatar security cooperation. The United States considers Qatar a key ally in the Gulf, hosting the Al Udeid airbase outside Doha.

Trump has expressed his dissatisfaction with Israel’s attack, noting the potential disruption to ongoing Israel-Hamas ceasefire negotiations. The dinner meeting with Trump is expected to cover the Doha attack and ongoing efforts to end the Gaza war.

This week, the U.S. administration has attempted to balance relations between its Middle Eastern allies and Israel. The issue came to the forefront when the U.S. joined other members of the United Nations Security Council in condemning Israel’s strike on Qatar.

In a show of continued support for Israel, Secretary of State Rubio is set to visit Israel for a two-day trip ahead of the UN summit on September 22, where several Western countries plan to recognize a Palestinian state.

France and Saudi Arabia have played a key role in pushing for collective action to end the Gaza conflict and achieve a fair, lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian dispute, which has so far claimed over 64,000 lives.

During his visit to Israel, Rubio is expected to emphasize shared goals, including preventing Hamas from regaining control over Gaza and ensuring the safe return of hostages.
