Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that Europe and the West have failed in their response to the crises in Gaza and Ukraine, warning that double standards are undermining the West’s global credibility. Sánchez described Israel’s attacks on Palestine as “one of the darkest international crises of the 21st century.”

Speaking before talks with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London, Sánchez emphasized that the United States under Donald Trump weakened the rules-based international order, posing a serious risk to Western countries. He welcomed Europe’s efforts to recognize a Palestinian state but acknowledged that the overall response had been inadequate.

Sánchez criticized right-wing parties for adopting far-right narratives on climate change, misleading the public. He also highlighted the economic and social benefits of migration, stating that Western societies must decide whether to be open and growing or closed and shrinking.

Despite his government being shaken by corruption allegations, Sánchez affirmed that Spain continues to maintain its economic and social policies. He also stressed that the European Union could regain leadership in international crises by acting morally and consistently.

“We must abandon double standards and act decisively on the Green Deal and humanitarian policies. Europe and the West can strengthen their credibility by behaving ethically and consistently in times of crisis,” Sánchez said.
