In Niger State, central Nigeria, a fuel tanker exploded following a traffic accident, killing at least 29 people and injuring 42. The incident occurred after locals gathered around the overturned tanker to collect leaking fuel.

Local officials stated that the tanker overturned and caught fire, leading to the explosion. Such accidents are common in Nigeria due to poorly maintained roads and frequent traffic violations, including speeding.

Since taking office in May 2023, President Bola Tinubu’s removal of fuel subsidies and exchange rate controls has driven people to take dangerous measures to obtain fuel. These policies have contributed to rising living costs and increased risks for citizens.

In March, a similar accident killed 10 people, while in January, another tanker incident resulted in 98 fatalities. Fuel tanker accidents remain frequent in Nigeria, linked both to infrastructure deficiencies and risky behaviors by the public.
