Speaking at the joint press conference held after the summit, President Erdoğan pointed out that the mandate of the international peacekeeping force is coming to an end, stating that this process constitutes a strategic turning point for the region. He expressed Turkey's readiness to actively support any constructive steps aimed at protecting Lebanon's sovereignty.
Security Arrangements in the New Era
Erdoğan stated that Turkey wants to assume an active role in international efforts to fill the potential security vacuum after the withdrawal of the UN mission from the field. In this context, he noted that all kinds of support will be provided to enhance the capacity and institutional structure of the Lebanese army, and that diplomatic efforts against Israel's attacks and violations are being closely monitored.
Additionally, Erdoğan pointed out that Turkish institutions and experts are ready for the reconstruction of the southern regions heavily damaged by conflicts, emphasizing that humanitarian and technical aid will continue to increase.
Strategic Partnership Message from Beirut to Ankara
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun emphasized that the ties established with Turkey are of a strategic nature. Noting that historical ties have gained even greater importance amid today's crisis environment, Aoun stated that this high-level visit, taking place after many years, elevates solidarity between the two countries to the highest level.
Detailing the severe economic and humanitarian picture created by the war in his country, Aoun stated that despite the suffering of his people, their resolve to rebuild the state remains unwavering.
Single Army and Sovereignty Emphasis
One of the most striking topics of the meeting was security policies. Aoun clearly stated that the security of Lebanese territories will be entrusted solely to the state's official armed forces, and that the country's defense will be conducted under a single central authority and a unified national army.
Stating that Lebanon displays a resolute stance on the liberation of all occupied territories and the safe return of displaced citizens to their homes, Aoun expressed the need for the support of friendly countries, primarily Turkey, during the economic recovery process.
International Initiatives and Future Steps
Efforts led by France and Italy to establish a new multinational mechanism following the expiration of the current international force's mandate at the end of 2026 are welcomed by the Lebanese administration. Cooperation opportunities in energy, infrastructure, and trade were also discussed in detail during the contacts in Ankara. Following the talks, it was decided that delegations from the two countries will accelerate technical-level work to implement the agreed-upon projects.
