U.S. Ambassador to Ankara, Tom Barrack, highlighted Turkey’s pivotal role in the ceasefire process in Gaza during a speech at an international security forum held in Bahrain. Barrack stated that the agreement would not have been possible without Turkey’s mediation, saying, “This ceasefire would not have happened without President Erdoğan's contribution.”
He added that U.S. President Donald Trump had personally thanked Erdoğan several times throughout the process. Barrack also acknowledged Qatar’s significant support, noting that Turkey’s communication channels with Hamas were key in keeping the group at the negotiating table.
In his speech, Barrack criticized past international policies, arguing that Western strategies in the Middle East have long been ineffective. He stated that approaches which ignore the region’s historical and cultural context have ultimately caused more harm than good.
Turning to developments in Syria, Barrack mentioned ongoing talks between the Syrian regime and the PKK/YPG-led SDF, noting, “I believe the two sides are close to finding common ground.”
