Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has been re-elected after winning 98% of the votes in a highly disputed election. The Election Commission announced that Suluhu secured nearly all of the 32 million votes cast.
However, the election process has faced strong criticism due to a lack of transparency and widespread violence. Observers reported that hundreds of people lost their lives, and many others were injured during the unrest surrounding the elections.
Several human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, condemned the government’s repressive policies ahead of the elections. The organization’s reports highlighted serious human rights violations such as enforced disappearances, torture, and extrajudicial killings.
The government, however, denied all allegations, insisting that the elections were conducted freely and fairly.
Samia Suluhu Hassan first assumed office in 2021, following the death of then-President John Magufuli, becoming Tanzania’s first female president.
