The city of El-Fashir, in Sudan’s North Darfur state, is facing a deepening humanitarian catastrophe. The Sudan Doctors’ Network has reported that at least three children die every day in the city due to malnutrition and preventable diseases. In a statement released by the independent medical organization, it was noted that conditions in El-Fashir have deteriorated sharply for more than a month. “Child deaths are rising because of severe food shortages and a lack of medical supplies. There are no signs of opening a humanitarian corridor that could save thousands of children,” the statement said. The network, citing information from its field teams, warned that “the situation has gone beyond control” and that the food and medicine crisis has reached catastrophic levels. It added, “Every single day, we lose at least three children due to hunger, disease, and the collapse of health and humanitarian services.”Meanwhile, four UN agencies — the International Organization for Migration (IOM), UNICEF, the World Food Programme (WFP), and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) — issued a joint statement saying that 260,000 civilians, including 130,000 children, are trapped in El-Fashir, cut off from food, water, and healthcare. The El-Fashir Resistance Committees also reported that 239 children have died of starvation as a result of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) siege on the city.El-Fashir, a key hub for humanitarian operations across Darfur’s five states, has been under RSF blockade since May 10, 2024, prompting international warnings about the dire consequences for civilians. The war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, which erupted on April 15, 2023, has devastated the country. According to UN and local reports, around 20,000 people have been killed and more than 15 million displaced. A study by U.S. universities estimates that the true death toll may exceed 130,000.From El-Fashir, the message is clear: “Hunger and disease are taking our children, day after day.”
