In Fasher, a city in Sudan’s West Darfur state, heavy clashes have erupted in recent days. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that over 26,000 people have fled Fasher in the past 48 hours, noting that the number could rise as security conditions worsen.Humanitarian Crisis and Infrastructure DamageThe attacks have caused significant damage to Fasher’s basic infrastructure. Electricity and water systems have been disrupted, medical facilities damaged, and humanitarian operations hindered. Army spokespersons emphasized that every inch of territory will be defended and civilians’ safety will be protected.Situation in the RegionSince April 15, 2023, ongoing clashes in Darfur have resulted in around 20,000 deaths and displaced over 15 million people. Studies conducted by American universities suggest that the death toll may be significantly higher, possibly around 130,000.Civilians are being forced to leave the city to protect themselves and access basic necessities.
