Europe Prepares for Potential Military Confrontation with Russia

Europe has begun serious preparations for a possible military conflict with Russia in the coming years. Nearly four years after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, European capitals increasingly view Moscow as a direct and short-term threat to the continent’s security.

NATO Secretary General Marc Rutte warned that Europe could face a war “on the scale of our ancestors’ experience,” highlighting scenarios involving widespread destruction, mass mobilization, millions of displaced people, and heavy casualties. According to military sources, this warning aims to raise public awareness and underscore the severity of the current threat.

Le Figaro columnist Nikola Barro notes that this period has seen a resurgence of the “strategic foresight” approach across Europe, from military planning units and intelligence agencies to research centers and political offices.

Discussions focus on how Russia might act, its objectives, how the United States and China would respond, and whether European countries, particularly France, could withstand a prolonged conflict. Military leaders consider uncertainty itself a risk factor requiring preparedness.

NATO has updated regional defense plans for all areas of Europe to address potential attacks. These plans serve as a framework for member states, while major countries like France are developing national plans aligned with NATO’s collective strategy.

French military officials emphasize that this coordination ensures rapid, joint readiness despite limited resources and multiple threats, including drones, cyberattacks, overseas territories’ security, and terrorism.

France has established “red teams” within its military to simulate Russian decision-makers and identify Europe’s vulnerabilities. The French military has prepared 14 different scenarios, up from six previously, based on the July “National Strategic Review.” The review aims for France to be ready by 2030 to participate in high-intensity, long-term European conflicts alongside its allies, while also considering potential internal challenges such as sabotage or instability.

Military planning is not limited to conventional scenarios, such as Russian tanks advancing into central Europe. More complex possibilities are also considered, including limited provocations in the Baltic states, attempts to control the strategic Suwalki Corridor, pressure in the Arctic region, or destabilization efforts in non-NATO countries like Moldova.

European leaders are also taking maritime, space, and hybrid threats seriously. The potential reduction of U.S. engagement in Europe is no longer merely theoretical but a concrete concern for European security planners.

Experts emphasize that any Russian test would not only be a military challenge but would also measure Europe’s political will, economic resilience, and ability to bear the costs of a prolonged war.
