Venezuela has called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council, citing U.S. military activities in the Caribbean as a threat. The country described Washington’s deployment of warships and a nuclear-powered submarine in the region as a “serious threat to regional peace and security.”Venezuela’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Samuel Rinaldo Moncada Acosta, stated that recent developments clearly endanger both regional and international peace and stability, and the purpose of the meeting is to draw the Council’s attention to the situation. Moncada said the main goal of the session is “to assess potential threats and develop measures to counter the U.S.’s aggressive plans.”President Nicolás Maduro’s government warned that the U.S. might plan an armed intervention in Venezuela in the near future. This call comes immediately after the U.S. Congress rejected legislation that would have limited President Trump’s authority to use lethal force against drug traffickers. The U.S. maintains that its ships and submarines deployed in the southern Caribbean are part of anti-drug operations, but attacks on suspected smuggling vessels have already resulted in at least 21 deaths.Maduro accused Washington of “armed aggression” and claimed that the U.S. is using the drug trafficking issue as a pretext to impose regime change in Venezuela and seize the country’s vast oil reserves.Venezuela has urged the Security Council to examine these developments and take action against activities that threaten international peace.
